I. Fact

I am a unicorn. That is to say, I am a creature of human imagination. With these words I affirm my true identity.

The Unicorn's Essence

A menagerie of animals, some historical and some fantastic, has been deployed at various times and places to represent the unicorn. In the Bible we find the wild ass of Palestine and the rhinoceros mentioned in this connection. In medieval times the double-spiraled task of a whale was sold to royal courts in the guise of the purifying horn of the “monoceros.” A rare genetic mutation of the domestic goat produces a cloven-hooved version of this single-horned beast. It seems to have been this latter animal which has inspired many contemporary artistic representations. Other modern representations resemble a horse with a single horn. Still others combine features of both goat and horse.

It would take us on a perhaps interesting, yet relatively unimportant side trip to discuss which of these several beasts “truly” represent the unicorn. More important for this journal is the insight into the concept of the unicorn, a concept which possibly predates written history. Instead of conducting a safari, I have decided that the essence of the unicorn’s cage in the planetary zoo is that it remain empty. A unicorn, caged, literally becomes something else—a crystallization, a cross-section of an evolutionary process.

Of course if our zeal for fixed comprehension were compelling enough, we might commence our hunt in the domain of the unicorn’s personality. We might say that Monoceros represents the strength of human personality armored by faith in God. Or that what is represented is the love of the soul for purity. Or that the symbolism is of the healing potentiality in a magic universe. These qualities might well stand for the current expression of what is unicorn like. But no list of qualities can capture the central feature of this creature: it is a being unfinished.

Humans and Unicorns

Here is a revolutionary thought—some, but not all, human beings are unicorns. If no specific species of animal can be found to have incontrovertible claim to the title, then perhaps this animal, no, this being cuts across biological species. Rozak has characterized man as Unfinished Animal in a book by the same title. Yet individual human beings must regard themselves as finished or unfinished. It is the latter group to which the term ‘unicorn’ may well apply. Indeed, if citations are as advanced as they now appear to be, some, or all, of the narwhales, and their whale and dolphin brothers and sisters, these may be unfinished beings in just the same sense. There may even be—and this is the most revolutionary facet of this idea—unfinished beings of other planets, other galaxies which are unicorns.

Unity

Let’s look at the unicorn’s single horn more closely. It consists of a long double spiral, intertwined very tightly. The unicorn symbolizes unity. Left and right are integrated. Much is said today about “whole-brain“ thinking. Human beings have both a logical, linear mode of thinking and an intuitive, analogical mode of thinking. Yet the contemporary culture known as “Western Rational” has the former modality as its dominant one. People belonging to this culture tend to specialize in one of these two modes.

We seem to have developed our rational potential at the expense of our intuitive capabilities. Ideally, both would develop simultaneously and in an interdependent fashion. Any being open to pursuing such holistic thinking is evolving into a unicorn.

Of course, we in the West have never been completely without our intuition. Even the crown jewel of our thought; physical science, is without a logic of discovery. Ultimately, great thinkers have always relied upon their insights as the fuel for their complex logical-deductive knowledge machines. But it is as if we have, until recently, hung our gaudiest emeralds, rubys, and diamonds on only the left horn of our thinking.

Sensitivity

There’s even more significance to the single horn of the unicorn. It is usually depicted as growing out of the center of the forehead. In many esoteric traditions this is the location of the spiritual eye. Some forms of meditation focus on the eyes at this point. We are told that in deep meditation a blue, five-pointed star may be “seen.” The quotation marks indicate spiritual sight, rather than normal sight.

What is the spiritual site which the unicorn possesses? Simply this: it is a sensitivity to the connectedness of everything.

Now the Western mind has come to a knowledge of the connectedness of everything, but “through the back door.” That is, our elaborate and logical science has concluded, quite reluctantly, that m = e / c2. In plain language, matter is a light form. But most of us in the West still do not see the truth embodied in Einstein’s famous equation. We have been told that the particles we see are waves, necessarily extended throughout time and space, necessarily interconnected.

We remember this, we deduce this connectedness of everything. But the unicorn has a sensitivity to such connectedness! Certainly, unicorns of whatever biological and/or planetary species sense a connectedness to each other, and to all of creation—not just the narrow representation of it which we piece together by our physical vision.

This is part and parcel of being unfinished! I as a unicorn sense my connectedness to everything, and so I sense how I must ever continue to interplay with all other entities, I cannot finish myself, yet I can most be myself by intuitively connecting and flowing with the universal process.

Light

The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thy eye is single, the whole body also is full of light, but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. if thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light. St. Luke, 12: 34-36

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 1 John, 1: 5

In Luke 12 there is a mysterious quote of Jesus’ words. He is to have said that the light of the body is the eye. If the eye is single, then the body is full of light. Couldn’t Jesus have been speaking of the integrated, spiritually sensitive vision we have been considering? And if so, what can it mean to say that the body is full of light?

I think that I know the answer to this latter question, but we will need to move beyond the physical body of the unicorn, if we are to propose this answer. We will need to describe the rainbow body.

We of the western world have arrived at the point where someone would not surprise us who said, “The human body is filled with, and is surrounded with energy fields.” We also know that what scientists call energy fields and what we call light are just different forms of electromagnetic radiation. We even know that devices can be built which will “translate” these vibrations into visible light.

So we might at least be open to the idea of a more evolved sensory apparatus which could directly perceive the energy fields in a living being. However, we might not be so open to the idea that the path to evolving such vision is necessarily an ethical, a spiritual path. Yet in the quote from Luke, Jesus is clearly opposing the single eye, the light of the body, with the evil eye, which somehow negates the body’s light.

Later we will talk about the rainbow body. I believe that the many versions of this body resulted from an evolving, but still not finely tuned, form of sensing.

And God said, let there be light; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. Genesis 1: 3–4.

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John … up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was as white as the light. St. Matthew 17: 1-2.

Unicorns are Androgynous,

For now, let’s see if we can continue to learn from examining how artists have represented the unicorn. One thing is certain: its sex life and its gender are somewhat shrouded in mystery.

I have never seen a picture of a unicorn family. Most often, a single adult is out roaming the meadows, hills, or even the stars. I’ve never even seen a baby unicorn, now that I think of it. Even in medieval tapestries, the unicorn is shown frequently in a small pasture surrounded by a fence, or resting its head in the lap of a virgin. And remember that it was precisely the young lady’s freedom from sexual experience which attracted the creature in the first place. At least in our visual representations, the unicorn is connected with asexuality.

Nor is there a clear gender identity depicted. To begin with, recall the use of the goat or horse in these representations. These two animals do not have as distinct male and female forms as do many creatures—say the lion or the red bird. Horses, especially, are like this. I must admit to having seen one picture of a pink unicorn with its curly mane tied in lavender bows. but most often, the impression we get is of an animal with great strength, a love of freedom, and a curiosity which fuels much exploration. Yet the unicorn is a gentle creature. I have never seen a depiction of a unicorn in combat.

What are we to make of this? I sense a clear meaning here. This creature is not limited by traditional gender polarity. It has the full range of capabilities of its species—in a word, it is androgynous.

And more than this. The unicorn is not a being focused on the expression of creative energies at the physical sexual level. It is simply attracted more to the creativity involved in free exploration of all levels of existence.

Noncompetitive,

Unicorns are not competitive, at least not in the sense of trying to be better than some other creature. For one reason, this would be a force opposing their sense of connectedness to everything.

This helps to explain their androgyny. The opposite of androgyny is the heterogynic polarity. In this form of gender identity, one’s biological sex determines one’s position at one or the other extreme end of a continuum of possible ways of being human. On this theory male is logical, active, dominating, while female is intuitive, passive, nurturing. Competition arises when males try to out-dominate each other; they see this as necessary for establishing their identity at this extreme end of the continuum.

By contrast, a unicorn finds itself drawing its behavior and expressing its being all along the continuum of possibilities. One situation may call for a dominating approach, another situation, a nurturing one. A unicorn does not strive for perfection in any dimension: it simply flows perfectly with the situation.

Not focused on carnality,

Neither are they focused on carnality. I would define carnality as a dominating desire to experience pleasures of the material world, that is to say, unicorns do not focus on achieving physical security, luxury, sensations of eating, drinking, and sex, power, position, or possession. They are focused on the experiences of novelty, beauty, and union with creation.

However, unlike many human beings, unicorns are aware that they need not compete or strive for these experiences on which they focus. Beauty is everywhere, but its appreciation is not. Union with creation requires the kind of openness which unicorns naturally experience. This same open attitude is required for appreciation of the infinite novelty of every situation.

This is precisely how the soul of the unicorn (which is mostly soul to begin with) is fed. As it opens to the marvelous interchange between itself and the universe, its spirituality grows and grows.

By contrast, beings who focus on carnality do not nurture their souls. Carnal desires are quite specific. If I simply must have two scoops of Swiss almond chocolate ice cream each night, I have become closed to the other 28 or 31 flavors I could be experiencing. If I lost for 5‘6“ blondes with blue eyes who are between 28 and 31, I will not even see thousands of other wonderful people.

Under these kinds of desires I cannot accept what comes my way unless it meets specific requirements, and eventually I will become alienated from most of creation. Then I will not be able to claim my status as unicorn.

And Vegetarian.

There is another interesting facet of the fact that both the goat and the horse have been used as models for the unicorn. For both these animals are basically vegetarian. Carnivorous beasts must dominate their food. They must terminate the existence of a sentient organization of single cells—an animal—in order to feed. It would not be overgeneralizing to say that that the sustenance of flesh-eating creatures resists being prey.

Grazing creatures are a peaceful lot. True, a stallion might attack for the protection of himself or his kind. A goat might eat the farmer’s vegetables or root around in her trash barrel for some paper labels off of tin cans. But it is not clear that the unicorn is even this removed from a peaceful existence. Human beings who wish to become unicorns need to move in the direction of herbivores. To begin with, regardless of what anyone may have told you, it is not necessary to eat meat. (Although it may indeed be necessary to eat flesh if one wants to maintain a dominating, polarized style of living.)

Of course, it is much simpler, much cheaper, and much more healthy to be vegetarian. But these aren’t morally compelling reasons for such a practice.

As I see it, becoming a vegetarian symbolizes a non-violent attitude towards sentient beings. Such a practice is one of many which helps human beings to tune into their sensitivity to connectedness. Meat in the body creates if you will, static or interference with our rainbow body. So do unnatural foods such as refined sugar, flour, and rice, by the way.

Astral Travel

Often, artists show unicorns exploring landscapes with flora and fauna which bear but little resemblance to earthly vegetation and creatures. Only a few human beings can recall and recount any visions of this astral world.

I, myself, can think of only two or three such experiences. Astral awareness lies somewhere in between ordinary waking reality and ordinary dreaming.

In lucid dreaming we experience events and ourselves as if we were awake within our dream. Astral awareness is like a lucid dream, yet still closer to waking reality. Events perceived during astral awareness leave their trace in space-time. Astral travel occurs when, while we are in a state of astral awareness, we dissociate the finer energy fields from our physical body and allow this “astral” body to travel through the world according to astral laws.

Many astral travelers recount stories of earthly events which are independently verified. Yet others, not so earth-bound, experience astral beings unlike anything found here on earth. Perhaps they are experiencing the astral dimension of other planets which support life. Astral travel of this sort is a natural consequence of the unicorn’s sensitivity to the connectedness of all things. Through this means, it (the unicorn) maintains its sense of the sublime.

Play

Only human beings work, so far as we know. A definition of play is “ the spontaneous activity of children.” Jesus has said that we must become as little children if we are to enter the kingdom of heaven. If we really enjoy what we do “for a living,” we say “ it’s not really work.” Adult humans in hierarchical society are conditioned to the dualism of work and play. How ununicorn.

The unicorn is the playmate of the universe. An integrated creature would not understand that there were separate times for work and play. Work only becomes possible when we separate the now from the future and then try to force it into a predetermined direction of our own construction. Swimming upstream all the time is work.

The unicorn always trusts the universe. It trusts itself to be in the universe, open and spontaneous. It interacts with all of creation in a spontaneous generation of ever new experience. Just as the kitten with a piece of ravelled string, the child in a new backyard, and the lovers gently teasing, so is the unicorn engaged in a rapt, deeply satisfying, playfully loving activity. Play is the perfect activity for an essentially unfinished creature. Play is never finished, always fun, and exist only for its own sake. It is what everyone would do if they had nothing that they were supposed to be doing. Play is what the unicorn does.

Love

But the time is come, my friends, to speak of the unicorn’s finest quality. The unicorn is integrated, sensitive, mostly spiritual, connected to the universe, androgynous, uncompetitive, non-violent, peaceful, sublime, appreciative of beauty, and playful. What single word could better sum up these attributes? The word is “loving.”

You see, the universe and all of the creatures in it are composed of love. Yet of all God’s creatures, the unicorn is the most loving. Love itself is the very energy of life. Love is the current which is sensed by sensitive beings when they experience connectedness to each other and to everything. It is the love which envelops and permeates each creature which we have called “the rainbow body.” It is our spiritual sensitivity which “sees” the various contours and swirling voices of this rainbow envelope.

I will tell you something interesting about God’s love. Some creatures are able to express it in a more advance form than others. It has to do with their degree of spiritual evolution.

For example, take the human unicorn on the next page. I have marked the approximate locations of seven centers of its rainbow body. These are lenses of loving energy. Each center has certain feelings associated with the flow or blockage of love energy within that center.

The Chakras or Energy Centers in the
Rainbow Body of the Human Unicorn

2

7

(for convenient identification, I have numbered these centers, but please note that Eastern tradition numbers them in the reverse order order and calls them “chakras.”)

In a spiritually realized being the energy of all these centers is balanced or harmonized. The lower, or ego, centers are tuned to the heart centers, which in turn are tuned to the higher, or Christ centers. Any creature experiencing blockage needs self-realization.

Theories of The Rainbow Body

Finally, we come to an explanation of the term “ rainbow body.” I will give you the facts as I know them and let you decide for yourself.

The earliest versions of this theory (C. W. Ledbeater) had labeled and assigned certain color combinations to each energy center or chakra. They supposedly whirled and sparkle like many-petaled flowers to astral vision. They were embedded in the human aura, a multi-colored astral envelope. (Still finer energies existed at higher levels.)

More recently, I have encountered systems (Christopher Hills, Peter Demers) which correlated the seven energy centers with the seven colors of the rainbow. Thus, the three ego centers are red, orange, and yellow, the heart centers are green and blue, and the higher centers are purple and white (union).

A still different system, that of Rudhyar, correlates to the centers as tones in an overtone series: 7 is C below middle C, 6 is middle C, 5 is G above middle C, and 4, 3, and 2 form a C above middle C major chord.

Now what I think is that all these different systems are analogical by nature. That is, we are dealing with wave energies here. So it is only natural that light in the visual range and audible sounds share some of the properties of this spiritual energy. Perhaps, indeed, the “colors” of the energy body do appear as a “rainbow” to spiritual sight; or perhaps the energies do “harmonize” as the notes in an extended major chord.

What is more important, to my thinking and intuiting, is that we use these systems, these analogies, as tools and ladders in our ever unfolding awareness of the spiritual dimension without becoming too attached to any one of them.

Reincarnation

The unicorn is merely the final form of a reincarnatory process. More than half of earth’s people know about reincarnation. It is the means by which a soul purifies itself. A pure soul manifests itself here on earth in a harmonized rainbow body.

You see, there are seven levels of vibratory creation. We have said a lot about the levels six and seven, the material and the astral level. However, the swirling colors of the astral level are manifestations of what is only conception and intention at the fifth, or causal, level.

Above the fifth level, things start becoming connected in different ways than we earthlings are accustomed to. For one thing, we move to an organization which is acausal, beyond time and space, or synchronistic, as Jung said. The identity principle, that a is a and not b (a = a and a # b), no longer holds.

Level four is the intuitive level, and it can only be accessed by our intuitive and not our logical mode of thinking. At this level meaningful connections take precedence over causal connections. Reincarnation is based above this level. The meaning of 1000 lives may polarize and cluster about a single entity, the soul, which itself is a manifestation of the Divine order of Heaven, levels three, two, and one. Each soul reflects God, and hence we are created in God’s own image.

To us here on the material plane, this clustering of lives in their symbolic-spiritual significance appears as a succession or train of rebirths within the causal order. But this is not a true picture of the process. From the point of view of the Divine Order, time is just another dimension which can be accessed at will.

Flowers, Birds, Mountains, and Beyond

Flowers are beautiful to us because they stand as material symbols of the chakras of the astral level. The flight of birds represents the process of soul purification by which we see above the limits of a single material incarnation. The mountain has been our reminder of the challenge and the difficulty of elevated existence and also the true strength which lies therein.

“Beyond our earth eyes cannot see,
but, still, in dreams the soul is free
to see beyond the shadow-fall
of holy creatures, one and all.”

Evil

There are no evil unicorns. In fact, there is no evil. What appears to us as evil is an imbalance or disharmony in some level of vibratory creation. Beyond this creation is pure God—unbroken love. However, this “Being-in-itself,” to use a phrase of Sartre’s, involuted into itself and became “Being-for-itself.” Thus started the evolution of the created universe—God, the created, attempting Union with God, the uncreated.

Created Love has evolved up from the ego functions, through the heart functions, and is now proceeding, through the presence of the living Christ, toward complete reunion. Every “evil” act that emerges from the hand or mouth of humanity results from the disharmony (blockage of Love’s flow) in the astral body of some human being. This disharmony in turn resulted from the engagement of the soul-image of God and some human life. The so-called evil is like the sound of gears that don’t mesh perfectly when shifting to another speed.

Lives under ego organization express their love addictively—in compulsions, lusts, and power trips. This is not evil, for ego dominated creation must exist to experience its limitation. It must learn that carnal desire is insatiable, eventually cancerous.

We are (from the point of view of time-space) in a period of planetary unfoldment. Lives are being re-organized around the heart. The Age of Aquarius is upon us. Peace will rule this planet—when humans forgo ego organization and enter into the spirit of planetary sharing through the opening of their fourth and third centers.

Yet, eventually, the limitations (the evil) of even an earthbound existence for souls in search of God will be made known. It is then that our spiritual eyes will open completely, and we will join our unicorn companions in traveling the universe on astral beams of light.

Heart Centering

In denying the existence of evil, I am not denying that all manner of creatures exist which pray upon the spiritual confusion of humanity. But God did not create these beings. They are intelligence turned away from Love. And people experiencing negative feelings can attract to them themselves other creatures, both human and inhumane, which are motivated towards separation rather than union.

I Am a Priest

(link to music)

I am a priest!
I've come to lead you to the light;
the light that shines out of the dirt beneath your feet.
Come to the feast.
A feast that's hidden from your sight,
But you can have it, all of you,
Even the least of you.
But you can have it, all of you,
Even the least.
There was a time when we were closer to the earth,
When we were closer to the unity beyond all death and birth,
A time when loving people all could celebrate the seasons,
And they didn't need their reasons,
They just knew what they were worth.
I'll tell you it's coming back,
For soon we will break the backs of the bureaucratic insti-
tutions that just keep us chained in slavery to money,
So we never taste the honey flowing from the cosmic crack.

I am a priest!
I've come to show you to a vision;
It's a vision that's enveloping this planet.
Look to the East
And overcome your indecision.
Find that new, transforming fire
And start to fan it, too.
Find that new transforming fire
And start to fan it.
There'll be a time when we'll control reality,
And we'll do it for the benefit of all humanity,
A time when loving people really all become connected
By a web that is affected
By the beating of each heart.
I'll tell you it's coming soon,
The union of sun and moon in an integrated human
Race freed from the bondage of a world enslaved by power.
We'll be living in the tower growing from the cosmic crack.

One of the reasons for writing such a handbook as this is to assist the spiritual unfolding of the planet by teaching people how to protect themselves from satanic forces. Of course, the secret is so simple to elaborate: we must all strive to remain centered in the heart. Jesus understood how foolish it was to pit the human ego against the negative potential of the universe. How foolish it was to classify anyone as a sinner. How utterly hopeless it is to rail out at the universe because it is not as we would have it.

Look at the Table of Chakras previously presented. Do you see that every response of fears, tears, and anger centers us below the heart. Can you see the absolute necessity to view every act, every situation with compassion? All great avatars have been able to view their would-be destroyers with acceptance. In sacrificing their ego-body, they save their soul.

Through the heart is the doorway to heaven. Center yourself here, and you will deflate the disintegrative pretensions of even the most befuddled ego. And you might even assist it in its journey back to God. It is evil, not beauty, which is in the eye of the beholder!

Knowledge

To the Western mind, knowledge is something produced from the interaction of logical structures of mind with the data of observation. To the Eastern intelligence, knowledge is obtained only through a spiritual discipline such as Zen meditation or tai chi. Actually, knowledge is the permanent trace of all events in the universe on the universe. Any event is retrievable to spiritual sight. The subtotal of this knowledge is known as the Akashic Record. It is accessible to unicorns, God-realized beings, and other creatures. Nothing harmful will be revealed to spiritually realized beings. Other creatures should use extreme caution in consulting the Akashic Record. Just as an overload of electricity can blow a fuse, so can a superabundance of truth fry a mind.

The Holographic Model

We are just beginning to explore holographic theory. A holographic image of a three-dimensional subject can be reproduced on a two-dimensional photographic plate. A beam of synchronized light is split with half reflecting off the subject and half traveling directly to the plate. This produces interference patterns on the plate which look nothing like the subject. Yet when coherent light is shined through the plate, all the three-dimensional detail of the original subject is reproduced. Perhaps most astonishing of all is that even when the plate is broken into fragments, each piece contains information about the entire three-dimensional subject, although the viewer may have to move his or her head considerably up and down and from the side to side to retrieve the entire image.

Recent studies show that information may be stored in the human brain in holographic imagery. That is, information about past perceptions or thoughts may not have a specific brain location. Rather each brain cell may contain duplicate information about a range of events. More speculative still is the theory that the minds of this planet are fragments of a planetary intelligence.

Following this line of reasoning, it is possible that akashic knowledge works on holographic principles. I have a hunch that it works like this. The universe is like a holographic image in which all events are recorded. Each spiritually realized being, through opening of the “third eye,” which exists beyond time and space, has access to an infinite range of perspectives on the universal holographic image.

One point where the analogy breaks down is this. In the case of the two-dimensional hologram, the positioning of the viewer is under voluntary ego control. With akashic viewing, the would-be knower must trust the universal intelligence to determine the angle of viewing. This requires at least a centering in the heart.

Dreaming and Intuiting

Every human being in the world (and probably every mammal) spends two or three hours every night doing something of which many of them are almost totally unaware. They dream. Many people will tell you that they don’t dream, or don’t remember their dreams. This is understandable. We here in the West live in a society which attaches very little significance to dreaming. In fact, to be called a dreamer is usually considered a mild insult.

Now it happens that dreaming is a function of our intuitive, creative mind. Dreams are largely sequences of images. Furthermore, dream sequences and events are much more a product of the acausal, synchronistic processes of the fourth level of existence. Recall that Western thought has, until recently, recognized only fifth level, or logical-rational thinking as having a valid basis. So dreams have been swept under the linear warp and woof of the causal carpet.

Now that there is more excitement about “right-brain thinking,” we can expect a resurgence of popular interest in dreaming. And thank God for this. If we remember that intuitive thinking is more connected with creation, we may realize that in dreams, the universe speaks to us.

I have often noticed that my dreams vividly portray insightful relationships between myself and significant others. I have used dreaming therapeutically. A dream journal will yield great returns. As Ann Faraday suggests, a simple way to start is to give your dreams each a title, as if they were a movie. Also try to grasp the plot and feeling tone.

Lucid Dreaming and Unicorns

Nothing is more important to a unicorn than its dreams. Unicorns have a very high proportion of lucid dreams. What produces lucid dreaming is simply the harmonious presence of both rational and intuitive thought processes. In the West we have so tied our logical thinking to sense data that we tend to turn off our left brain when we go to sleep. But the left brain can be plugged into intuitive dream-data.

The problem with remaining so plugged into sense experience is that what counts as an observable event is largely determined by our culture. In dreaming we are more tuned into the total range of possibility.

One point about dreaming should be mentioned. As Castaneda suggests in The Eagle’s Gift, it is possible that two people can explore together a dream space. What is required is simply the trust in the shared space to do so. Perhaps in the not too distant future one friend will say to another, “Come over tonight, and we’ll go dreaming together.”

Magic

And so, our exploration of the unicorn’s ways has brought us far above and beyond the space-locked rigidity of causal reality. We are at the very borders of the magical side of creation.

Magic is simple in concept. It is any acausal connectedness which occurs because it was willed. We are, of course, familiar with quite a range of acausal phenomena. Extra-sensory perception, such as clairvoyance, telepathy, psychokinesis, and dowsing are now recognized to exist, at least by some who are not wedded to the metaphysical principal of local causation. Most of these phenomena, however, do not appear to be willed by the people who experience them. Psychic healing is a clearer example of a magical event, yet even here there is much confusion about how the will is used to focus on the desired end of health.

The unicorn’s horn has long been averred to possess the magical propety of purifying water which has been poisoned. My own thoughts on the basis of this belief are that it is largely symbolic: an integrated spiritual vision (the horn) can heal (can purify) negative feelings (poisoned water). At any rate, the intrigues of medieval sorcerers and necromancers were largely an affair of black magic, that is to say, the intentions of the would-be magicians were ego functions. The magic of the unicorn grows out of the fact that it is centered in its heart; it works white magic. Magic worked from the Christ center results in miracles.

Altered States of Being

In order to see where magic falls into the scheme of things, consider the six-pointed circle below. In day dreams we are permitting the intuitive or fourth level to construct possibilities of which we are aware, but the causal or fifth level is still the criterion for reality. In night dreams these possibilities seem real, yet are not. In lucid dreams, these possibilities are real, yet leave no trace on consensual reality.

With astral travel we begin to generate possibilities which intersect the causal order without altering it. And finally, with magic, possibilities are generated by the fourth level which actually do alter the space-time sequencing of events.

Magic works through a focusing of the will. An implicit or explicit deterministic metaphysics will never permit such a focusing. In order to work magic, it other words, the person must be operating on the metaphysical assumption that magic does work. Beyond this requirement, the biggest hurdle seems to be mental discipline. Affirmations said for a number of days seem to work. (I have found that writing an affirmation for four consecutive days, ten times a day, is foolproof.) There are also techniques of single-pointed concentration which can be learned.

A lot of prayers have been said and answered which really amount to black magic. Not that this is evil, but we should be aware that this strengthens the ego. All that black magic is, after all, is magic withouth light. We are not seeing what we ask for in its intimate connectedness to the universe, and hence the unforseen consequences of our blind prayers will probably come back to haunt us.

Health

Now the unicorn is intimately connected with the earth and its universe through its higher centers. Hence, to be in the presence of a unicorn is to be in a force-field centered in the heart and connected to the Planet Spirit. Unicorns reinforce good intentions.

Life here on earth has not evolved in a disconnected manner. It is the earth in combination with the universe which generates and sustains all life here. The natural tendency to health which is present in each creature is an earth presence. With our three ego centers we individuate from the planet, and with our two heart centers, we connect to the web of sentience sustained by earth mother-sky father.

Mother Earth has compassion for all God’s creatures. It is by tuning in to our first heart chakra that we receive this healing compassion. In a way, we work white magic just by centering in the middle chakra, because in doing so, we remove our own ego from the web of confusion which interlaces with the web of light. (Both webs are love, however, one kind illuminated, the other, not.)

Once we do open our hearts and connect with unselfish love, it is only a matter of time before our reservoir is brimming. All effective white magicians have an overflow of compassion. They have opened their second heart chakra, located in or just below the throat, with extension to tongue and hands. These healers radiate love and peace. Their words and invocations have a special healing force; their hands work magic with bent and diseased bodies.

Once again, those beings who have cleared the crystal channels of the heart will not long remain unconnected with The Christ. As it turns out, we do not have to find our way back to God unassisted. For in addition to the loving energy which bubbled out of the rocks of Planet Earth to produce the Evolutionary Tree, Uncreated God is reflected in the created universe as The Christ, a Holy Principle which actively seeks the return of life to heaven. This Principle has already manifested in the several avatars Buddha, Krishna, Babaji, and Jesus The Christ, the perfect and final reflection of God in human form.

When the open human heart is connected with the Living Christ, then does truly miraculous holy magic occur. However, this magic is no longer in the control of humanity; it occurs by Divine intercession and for Divine purposes. And so appealing is the reflected light of God that there is a tendency for divinely inspired healers to spend more and more time in holy contemplation. Sometimes when the sick congregate around Holy men and women, the healings occur almost as an afterthought.

A plethora of heavenly beings attend the Christ emanation; angels, archangels, cherubim and seraphim. The unicorn, however, is not a heavenly being. It is a perfectly evolved earth creature whose partaking of the Divine Order is perfectly integrated with its earth presence. That is its place in creation, its Divine purpose if you will: to be—to roam and fly. Perfectly beautiful, appreciative of all lovely existence, a harmonious balance of loving energy magically interacting with all of creation—that is the unicorn. It may travel to the stars, but the earth is its home.

This is why we most frequently see it pictured in a green field of colored flowers against a blue sky with puffy white clouds, or soaring against the black moon-filled night sky. These are the most basic facts of life here on earth. This is the background against with the creatures of this planet parade.

The Unicorn and the Butterfly

See the opalescent horn that turns upon itself:
Intertwining silver, as if from a land of elves.
The unicorn is silhouetted dark against the sky
Wanting only freedom now to be—to roam and fly.

And hear the magic music coming from another space,
Casting dancing shadows throught your ears onto your face.
See that you and he will soon no longer be apart.
Sense the mellow movement, feel the racing of his heart.

Multicolored butterfly, he sees you waiting there,
Resting undulating wings that soon will beat the air.
He knows that he’s affecting you in certain subtle ways.
The beauty of your fleeting form is cradled in his gaze.

He knows that what you are is what his soul can only sing;
His song is like the dazzling, silky crystals of your wings.
He’s been soaring near your flower-covered hillside as of late,
And he wonders if the unicorn and the butterfly can mate.
