II. Philosophy

It is not a generally recognized fact, but there are two different kinds of unicorns. That both the horse and the goat have been used to depict this creature is no accident. Later we will discuss sky unicorns which are more like the horse. For the present we will be discussing earth unicorns which are the more earthly of these two kinds. Their story is intertwined with the mythology of the Celtic earth religions.

Ancient consciousness

Imagine life as a pagan. You are very close to the Earth. If you were born in a temperate, wooded land, you probably dropped onto the cool, fertile soil of earth from your squatting mother’s womb. You were regarded by your parents and your tribe as a natural miracle over which they had little control. For the first years of your life, the close proximity between mother and earth which greeted your birth was maintained.

You were only minimally aware of your status as boy or girl. You were a child, and at that, literally a child of nature. The earth was everything to you, yet you did not know earth as a separate entity. What you knew in intimate detail were the men, women, and children of your tribe, the animals and plants on which you depended for your sustenance, and the rocks, streams, hills, forests, glades, valleys, sun, rain, clouds, heat, and cold of your day-to-day existence.

Except in times of extreme weather, you probably spent nearly all of your waking hours outdoors absorbing the sights, sounds, and textures of the earth. Precious little in your life was made by man or woman. You became aware of a certain cyclic rhythm to your life—night and day, sun and rain, new moon and full moon, summer and winter, birth and death.

To you, everything was alive, and what animated everything was spirit. The trees, rocks, streams, and flowers were alive. This was not your imagination, this was your reality. Every plant, every animal, every substance, you learned, had a place and a use. You were grateful for this as was your tribe. There was an immediate spiritual connection between you and everything. You communicated with every situation in which you found yourself.

Periodically, with the seasons, and with special points of each person’s life cycle, the tribe celebrated. These festivals were ritualized, yet you threw yourself into them with all of the single-minded intensity of a child freshly and deeply engrossed at play. There was an intentional communing with the deeper and greater spiritual forces in the world of the tribe.

You worshiped the cyclic manifestations; you worshiped the ebb and flow, the powerful Father Sun and fecund Mother Earth. All spirit was personified—that is, made into a perceived form with which you interacted, flowed, and expressed your desires. God walked with you and in many forms. In fact, for you and your tribe, there was no God, there were only many greater and lesser spirits.

In Western Europe around the time of Christ Jesus there existed such a pagan culture. It is out of this seething interconnectedness of spirit emanating from the Earth through her creatures that grew the fairies, sprites, elves, gnomes, leprechauns, trolls, centaurs, goblins, and the like. Were they real? I believe so. I believe that they were Planet Spirit manifesting in knowable personal form to humanity at a certain stage of development. They were a joint creation of intuitive mind striving to know God, a Planet Spirit, which loved them enough to generate and nurture their lives.

The goat, the first domesticated creature of agrarian paganism, was a manifestation of Nature’s love for Humanity. Through her milk, grass was transformed into food. This surely must have appeared as magic. But other wild goats effortlessly climbed the high hills with their delicate balance and their cloven hoofs. Goat—at once friendly and free-spirited. Planet spirit has its playful side. Out of this helpmate of humanity, out of this soaring mountain-side explorer grew the first unicorn. A cloven-hooved, single-horned, magical beast that shared the woods and green morning misted valleys with the rock divas, the fairies, and other playful earth manifestations.

Danger

We in the Western World have come to think of ourselves as a superior form of humanity to this pagan world of Spirit individuated and personified. We refer to these people as “primitive.” Having constructed a Cartesian box into which animal spirit does not fit, we declare ourselves to have advanced beyond such superstitious nonsense. We can’t sense it, so they couldn’t either.

Fine and good; we began to exploit the earth for our “scientific and technological” purposes. We began to re-create the sterile Cartesian three-dimensional frame in our dwellings, building boxes within boxes within boxes. We separated work from play and insisted that the latter was for the sake of the former. We enclosed ourselves from the wind and the rain, created our own day-night cycle with artificial light, covered the grass with concrete. With all of this came a loss of connectedness to the earth.

We became, as a society, obsessed with wrenching from nature every last vestige of novelty and replacing it with predictable laws and machines. And we pointed with pride at huge monuments of stone and garbage we called “cities.” Progress, we said, this is progress. We must do it faster and faster. Bigger buildings, more powerful vehicles. More sterile homes. Not a trace of mother earth should remain, unless it is sterilized and put in human-made receptacles called “flower pots.”

Our tribes became cities, our cities, states, and our states, nations. And now the nations fight to determine which one is the most; most powerful, most scientific, most modern. There is no place for the unicorn in such serious and advanced business as war. No time to touch the rich, black earth with reverence.

And in all of this, the earth unicorn has had to search high and wide for a human playmate. Two centuries ago there were still earth people in this North American continent with whom a unicorn could commune. But the white man came and covered their land with cities and their forest with tractor-tilled fields. He called it manifest destiny. Mother Earth cried with each gaping strip mine, oil spill, and seal clubbing. Just as a great whale will blow blood with a fatal harpooning, so Mother Earth’s Own precious fluids were spilled and her body contaminated and ridden with stench.

The unicorn runs cautiously today, with its head down; it senses that its mother may be dying. Its purpose is to play, but there is so little playfulness left.

Hope

And yet, occasionally, in some hidden mountain glen, unicorn meets butterfly. Attracted by the peaceful heart of the one-horned creature, the shimmering, mica-crystalled wings hover and gently land on the twined bands of silver. At that moment playful spirit meets playful spirit. Earth meets earth; God meets God. At that moment there is hope.

There is hope wherever people find a place away from the technological jungle that has grown out of man’s desire to dominate the Earth. There is peace where human hearts open to the streams of harmony that flow from what grows in undisturbed hills and valleys.

Have you noticed how many small groups are finding a place aside from the hurricane of greed and pride where they can give and receive love?

Yes, it is true, we find the world deeply in crisis. Humanity finds itself racing across a shaky bridge of steel and concrete which our planet can hardly support. Some have begun to see what monuments to foolishness we have built, yet the vast majority continue to plot along the crumbling way, pushed from behind and pulled from in front.

Yet the earth unicorn sees a grim waterfall on the other side of this bridge from the harmony of the past. It will take all of our vision and courage to follow its lead. Our bridge must find a future foundation once again firmly anchored in the brown-green soil of our home planet.

Brand New Sound

Everybody listen—there’s a brand new sound.
It’s coming from the tree tops and up from under the ground.
I hear it in the stirring breezes high above my head.
I hear it in the swirling waters of the river bed.
I sense it in the throbbing heart that beats within my chest.
It seems to come from all around—from north, east, south and west.
There is a spirit moving in the earth.
Witnessing a planet giving birth
To an age of love and unity that makes me want to shout:
“You know, there is no up or down, there’s only in and out.
People, please believe me; it started long ago
The spirit glowed with golden light and filled the earth below.
It swirled around each tiny plant and filled its leaves with grace.
It blessed the dolphins and the whales; it changed the human race.
It planted all the seeds from which were born the avatars,
Who came to help connect us with the galaxies and stars.
There is a spirit moving in each heart,
Teaching us how we can do our part
To remove all selfish boundaries of nation, sex and race,
And help the people find a time when satisfaction
Shines from every face.

Paradox

And so we arrive at this completely paradoxical situation. Here we are in a world nearly overcome by pollution, greed, war, violent crime, hunger, nationalistic bickering, and racial hatred. Our streets, our homes, even our bodies are not safe. Everyone has a favorite theory, yet no one seems to be able to stem the tide of confusion and selfishness. We live in an atmosphere of lust and violence that even subtly permeates the play of our children.

Yet in the midst of this madness, a few percent of the people are crying, “Peace! Love! Justice!” We do, some of us, have hope. We have not given up. But this is not just a replay of the ‘60s. These are not diehard hippies who cry for change.

We have something new! We have a new metaphysics, literally a metaphysical revolution. We foresee a possibility that the metaphysics of analysis, separation, linearity, materiality, egocentricity, and causality will be replaced by a metaphysics of synthesis, union, intuition, spirituality, compassion and synchronicity. Like the earth unicorn, we race across the bridge hoping to ground ourselves and even our blinded, groping society in the very connectedness of the universe itself.

We sing of the beauty of the earth. We build centers of appropriate technology. We plan and experiment with model communities. We explore altered states of consciousness. We meditate. We lead lives of voluntary simplicity in the midst of gross consumptive materiality. We talk about, dream of, work toward, and pray for the New Age.

Beautiful planet

(link to music)

We have a beautiful planet.
Everything we need is here.
Sun in the blue sky above us.
Bare feet in green grass down here.
Purple mountainsides over rolling hills,
Lakes reflecting willows and daffodils,
How they fill my eyes and satisfy my soul.

All of the folks on this planet
Come from a union of love.
Some folks just don't realize this.
What can they be thinking of?
When there's rustling leaves, bright red singing cardinals,
Children laughing in my backyard.
How they fill my ears and satisfy my soul.

So while you live on this planet
Do this one thing if you will:
Just take what you need, and remember
To leave it more beautiful still.
åIt can be the way it was meant to be;
People living in perfect harmony.
That would fill our hearts and satisfy our souls.

We have a beautiful planet.
Everything we need is here.
The light fills the blue sky around us.
And bare feet in green grass down here,
Bare feet in green grass down here.

Thesis and Antithesis

We are not headed back to a form of neopaganism. Indeed, true pagan practice is no longer possible. I owe this insight to Dane Rudhyar, who argues that this age of egocentricity through which we are now passing is a necessary corrective to the complete lack of sense of separateness from the tribe of the preceding era.

Not that there was not much that was marvelous in paganism and still possible to some degree with neopaganism. Unlike the addictive lusts of the ego-organized personality, the pagan, in his or her experience of existence, sex, and the social order of the tribe, also experienced complete union with spirit. In some ritualized orgies, pagans apprehended their sexual-carnal being with a religious awe. They also could experience a perfect social belongingness.

But without the ego differentiation of “modern” society, paganism would have remained an evolutionary cul-de-sac. With all of its obvious ills, Western-Rational culture brought an advance. Not, as many might argue, technological wonders, miraculous medical drug cures, effective and rapid transportation and the like. Rather, this culture brought a social structure in which the individual holographic image of the world was clearly differentiated from the common social order.

We are now at the point where a synthesis is possible. The synthesis of humanity in the New Age will be both like and unlike paganism and its antithesis, which we might call dimensionism, the belief that everything has its dimensions and can be distinguished from everything else along these dimensions.

Synthesis

No, we cannot return to a tribe-bound, earth-bound existence. No. The new unity will have to be written within the individual hologram that now radiates from each heart.

New waters are being tasted now here on earth, but they have a sparkle and a scintillation that has not been suspected before. Pagans connected to water as a form of spirit emanating from the earth. Dimensionism, when it waxed spiritual at all, looked up and away from the Earth, looked eventually outward to the vast reaches of the physical universe. But having built an external platform, from that vantage point, it became possible to seek a deeper interior than pagan was capable of knowing.

Pagans, after all, only partook of the Earth Mother through their total connectedness to the tribe. They did not distinctively intuit the deeper support out of which the earth is manifested. They did not experience the earth as a speck in the cosmos. Dimensionists only partook of Sky Father as in infinite extension by analogy of the vast causal order. They did not experience the God within, by and large. The few who did, in clinging to the identity principle, could not embrace whole-heartedly that “I and the Father are one.” Indeed, such “arrogance” was blasphemous.

The new sparkle in the waters is our sense that we are connected to each thing both inside and outside. We can know the water whether we go out to it or we go intuit. For lack of a better word, I will call this kind of metaphysics holism. In the speck is the whole, in the whole is the speck, yet the two are distinct. It is, in effect, the acknowledgment of a non-dimensional geometry which is nontrivial: everything is everywhere, yet there are distinct things.

Embracing Holism 1: Baptism and Carnality

There is a Christian concept that will help us to focus on how one embraces the metaphysics of holism. That concept is baptism. In traditional Christian teaching baptism by water was only symbolic of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. “My sins were washed away, and my night was turned to day. Heaven came down and glory filled my soul.” These words of an old hymn express this well.

Unfortunately, it has always been difficult for Christians to hold to a concept of sin and also embrace the idea of non-judgement. And so I would like to express the idea of baptism in terms of New Age thinking.

The holistic perspective views carnality as necessitating dimensionist thinking. The carnal view of the world identifies totally with the history and future of a particular incarnation. As a carnally identified being, all that I have to go on is what my five senses have told or may tell me and the lusts and desires and motivations that are sourced entirely in my physical body. In fact, I am satisfied only by interacting with other physical bodies. In the carnally identified being, what is called “conscious mind” is thought to be encapsulated, even alienated somewhere in the physical body. A mind such as this, encased in matter, is literally in the dark. Blindness, physical or mental, is no sin. And carnality is a form of blindness.

So you see there isn’t an exact parallel between the Christian concept and the New Age concept. Viewed as dirt, lust must be washed away. But viewed as blindness, lust must simply be exposed or illuminated. In the New Age, priest is replaced by teacher.

Embracing Holism 2: Baptism and Planet-Identification

But we must ultimately deal with a much larger issue than our own carnality. For when you consider it, our attachment to beautiful, blue-green mother earth with her misty white veil and pearl moon ring is a form of dimension thinking. As perfect and calming as is the earth unicorn, it exists as an extension of planet spirit.

Several billion years ago, when the universe set in motion our solar system, uncreated God said, “It is good.” sHe left us to evolve here on earth and trusted us to return to the Universe the same Love that has been received. God’s Love and Trust has always been here.

But now it appears that we may not make it as a planet. A certain human race has advanced its physical power far beyond its moral and spiritual wisdom. We need help. We may not make it unassisted. And, from beyond time and space, God has planted seeds in certain human form, seeds which grew into avatars. These avatars are teachers, and the baptism of earth into a new age is under their direction.

There has long been operating a force to synchronize to the Earth’s rhythm the vibrations of her creatures. Those beings who center in their heart, giving and receiving love to the planet, are with this force. However with the advent of Christ incarnations, there existed a still higher force operating to synchronize the earth and all her creatures with God.

The New Age comes at two levels. At the coming of Christ, the planet was flooded with light. But each earth creature, whose place it is to do so, is flooded with light as the spiritual eye opens. In terms of the rainbow body, spiritual baptism is the centering, not in the heart, but in the brow. when this occurs, the new platform on which the “born again” creature stands is Christ, sole reflected image of vibratory creation of uncreated God. With this, the order of miracles gains hierarchy over the causal order in the consciousness of the individual, who then becomes a non-dimensional being within a dimensional body.

Embracing Holism 3: The Synchronistic Instant

Some existentialist philosophers talk about an “existential moment” in each person’s life, when he or she realizes that he/she alone is responsible for the choices which he/she makes. There is a similar moment in the life of the New Age person, which we might call the “synchronistic instant.” This is the moment when we perceive a meaningful connection of such significance that we are certain that it was intentional, yet we also are certain that it could not have occurred according to the laws of the causal order. Most of us can recount such a moment of connectedness to the universe. And in this instant, we are transformed to a holistic metaphysics.

Yet the pull of the lower three centers is extremely strong. We want reality to follow orderly causal patterns. We want security (level 7), and if there is a threat to our existence, we want to see it coming. We are so attached to the objects of our sensual lusts (level 6), that the thought of disembodied experience is depressing. And our will to dominate (level 5) expressed both as a desire for certain causal knowledge and foolproof politics and technology, demands that we be separate, not connected. These are powerful motives to deny and to continue to deny the existence of synchronistic instants in our lives. Committed dimensionists become frustrated and angry when presented with this possibility. They say, “It cannot be true. There must be a logical reason.”

Teaching as Being

There are three teaching levels through which the heart of the carnally-identified person can be opened. They correspond to the three centers between the diaphragm and the crown.

Recall that when a person’s lower heart chakra is open, he or she is receiving the love of the planet and/or Christ. Such a person is a first level teacher. Since he/she is being filled, there is no need to manipulate others. The first level teacher just by being what he/she is, teaches by example and by removing self from the web of carnal illusion.

As a person’s heart becomes full, the higher heart chakra opens, and his/her words and deeds become genuinely helpful to any and all. This is the second level teacher, who also teaches by example, and, in addition, by actively intervening to bring good in to replace disharmonious aspects of others’ lives.

The third level teacher is the Very Christ, and Christ does this by making the causal order of the dimension-minded person “teach that person a lesson.” In other words, miracles are third level teachers. The person with the brow chakra open, in addition to having the good qualities of the first two levels of teaching, also teaches by becoming a channel for Christ’s miracles.

He Came To Us

(link to sheet music pdf)

He came to us, a babe in a stable;
The kings and shepherds knelt at His feet.
The heavens opened up, and the beautiful
Angels sang His praises sweet.
He walked the earth for thirty-three years,
And he taught us all the lesson of love.
He always said that all of the power in Him
Came from God above.
But some of the people hated Him,
And, blinded by their own sin,
They nailed Him upon a cross and thought
He'd never come again.
Yet then, somehow, a miracle happened,
He left the earth and rose to the sky.
And that is why when I see a beautiful cloud—
Why, I laugh, and I cry.
He lives with you and me in our hearts.
And soon my friend, he'll come, he'll come.

New Age Unicorn

We come in this round about metaphysical way back to the unicorn. The earth unicorn has always reached out to the clear night sky and embraced the stars. But as I have told you, it was a perfectly balanced earth creature. Yet since the incarnation of Jesus the Christ, the balance of earth itself is changed.

And because of this, a new evolution becomes possible for the unicorn. We have never seen the unicorns of Mars or Jupiter, or of the planets of Vega or Alpha Centauri. However, whenever their life evolves to a point where a Christ incarnation occurs, a similar evolution will become possible for these unicorns.

Tagore’s Tale

Rabindranath Tagore, in a delightful fable, tells how Man caught the Horse, and then tricked Brahma, who was upset by this, into allowing Man to keep the Horse in captivity. We need not recount the entire tale here; however, we do find this fable a fascinating account of the creation and nature of the horse.

According to Tagore, Brahma had been rather extravagant in the first creatures He had made. When the inspiration for the Horse struck Him, He called his Storekeeper for a quantity of each of the five elements. Come to find out, they were very low on earth, water, and fire, but had more than enough air and ether.

Undaunted, Brahma constructed the Horse out of the limited supplies remaining. The resulting creature had neither horns nor claws, and teeth only for chewing, not for biting. Since little fire was used, the Horse, though necessary in war, was not warlike.

The excess of air and ether made the horse “perpetually struggle to outreach the wind, to outrun space itself.” Other animals ran only when they had a reason, but the horse would run for no reason whatever, as if to run out of his own skin. He had no desire to chase, or to kill, but only to fly on and on until he dwindled into a dot, melted into a swoon, blurred into a shadow, and vanished into vacancy.

“The Creator is glad. He had given habitations to his other creatures, forests to some, caves to others, but because of his enjoyment of the disinterested spirit of energy in the Horse, he gave him an open meadow under the eye of heaven.”

Tagore’s loving and insightful characterization helps us to understand why the horse has so frequently been chosen by artists to represent the essence of the unicorn. In the horse we have a concrete symbol of the unicorn of the sky—an earth creature with vibrations so fine that it has a universal, ethereal quality about it.

Earth Unicorn—Sky Unicorn

The contrast between the earth unicorn and the sky unicorn is striking. The former plays in the earth-reflected light, while the latter seeks the Source of the light itself. The former is a settled creature, the latter, a creature in transformation. The former seeks to harmonize sky and earth, centering at the highest level of earthly vibration. The latter seeks to shed the lower vibrations of its being as it goes back to the source from which it emanated.

Put simply, it is the nature of the sky unicorn to quest for purification. In fact, if we are to be technically correct, we must record here that a truly purified sky unicorn could not even be experienced by earthlings. It is only the ones which are still questing for purification which we have a chance of catching a glimpse of. This is because they still contain enough “higher-density” vibrations to comprise a part of earth experience.

I must confess to you that in the parts of this journal, before I had made the distinction between earth and sky unicorns, much of what I said about unicorns really applies to unicorns in the earlier stages of transformation from earth to sky. It is not that more evolved unicorns do not possess some of these qualities, such as androgyny, non-violence, and integratedness. It is rather that as their metamorphosis unfolds, their devotion to the Source of Creation plays more and more of a role in their being.

To take a specific example, it is true that less evolved unicorns are vegetarian rather than carnivorous. However, as a unicorn begins to shed layers of more carnal energy, even their desire to eat plants begins to wane. They begin to recognize that the act of eating itself is a carnal motivation.

It is hard for us to understand existence at this level. For eventually, the metamorphosing unicorn will absorb and harmonize all of its carnal vibrations into its higher centers. It loses a desire for a specific incarnation. What it is like to be a unicorn composed of pure planetary love, I frankly still have not managed to imagine, so much am I still in the grips of dimensionist thinking.

De-incarnation

We can use the elements as expressed in the Tagore fable to understand the precise nature of this transformation through which the unicorn is going. In Western astrology as received in the Twentieth Century, there are four elements; fire, earth, air, and water, which are combined with three triplicities; cardinal (enterprising), stable, and mutable, to form 4 x 3 or twelve basic types of personality. It is one of these 12 personality types that expresses in each incarnation of a human being, although never in pure form.

If you study the Zodiac, you will find that the elements and triplicities repeat in a specific cycle fashion, both within in and between signs. Below as a table which illustrates these relationships between signs.

Cardinal

Stable

Mutable

Fire

Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

Earth

Capricorn

Taurus

Virgo

Air

Libra

Aside from the fact that this organization helps to explain certain aspects of the seasons, it also helps to explain how karmic balancing will work in a series of incarnations of any particular soul. Thus Taurus is said to be the karmic teacher of Aries, Gemini, of Taurus, Cancer, of Gemini, and so forth.

The unicorn, being already perfectly balanced, is undergoing a different kind of evolution: one from dense incarnation through successive refinements, to no incarnation at all. If we arrange Tagore’s five elements in order of decreasing density, we get earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Light is still less dense than ether, and God has no density at all. Thus, Tagore was trying to tell us, through mythic imagery, that the horse has a very refined nature. And in terms that we earthlings can understand, the sky unicorn is one whose transformation has progressed even beyond that of the horse’s stage of refinement.

Astral Endocrinology

We are now in a position to pull together many of the esoteric threads of this journal. You may recall the seven levels of vibratory creation mentioned early in our travels: material, 7, astral, 6, mental or causal, 5, intuitive or planetary, 4, etheric, 3, light, 2, and created God, 1. For the sake of completeness, let me point out the correlation between these levels and Tagore’s elements—earth, 7, water, 6, fire, 5, air, 4, and ether, 3.

You may now see why I chose to number the seven chakras of the astral body in the reverse of the traditional order. The three ego centers (recall the table of energy centers in the rainbow body on p. 10), are 7, the security center, corresponding to the material level, 6, the sensation center, corresponding to the astral level, and 5, the center of conception-control, which corresponds to the mental-causal level. The two heart centers are 4, the acceptance center, corresponding to the intuitive level, and 3, the center of understanding, which corresponds to the etheric level. Finally, the two Christ centers are 2, the devotion center, corresponding to the spiritual eye, or light of the body, and 1, the crown chakra, the center of union, corresponding to the level of Divine Love.

What we have just charted is a functional analysis of the endocrine glands at their astral level of emanation. That is, it is the function of the seven chakras of the rainbow body to exchange energy at the seven levels of vibratory creation. And so we finally arrive at an understanding of the rainbow metaphor in New Age literature: just as there are seven colors of the rainbow, from lower wavelength (red) to higher wavelength (violet), so are there seven “colors” of the astral rainbow, from greater density (the energies of the security center) to no density at all (the energies of the crown chakra).

Other De-incarnating Beasts

It is interesting that other cultures than ours have noted a bird-like creature with the ability to materialize and dematerialize. The phoenix was a fabulous scarlet and gold plumed firebird with a 600 year life-span. Only one at a time existed. Near the end of its incarnation, it fashioned an aromatic nest which it set on fire. From this funeral pyre sprang the reborn phoenix which embalmed the feathers of the old form in a myrrh egg which it deposited on the altar of the temple of Re. Both China and Egypt knew the phoenix.

In the New World the Quetzalcoatl or feathered serpent started as an earth and water deity of the Eighth Century Teotihuacan civilization. It was astralized into The Morning and Evening Star by the Toltecs. Quetzalcoatl sacrificed butterflies to the sun and was expelled by the god of the night sky for black magic. Consequently, it immolated itself on the funeral pyre.

Both eastern and western firebird were symbols of death, resurrection, and immortality. In China, the dragon also moved from a subterranean world, through an irrigation ditch, up to heaven to conquer a new empire. However, its arrogance caused it regret. In these creatures we see a mythological expression of absorbing and also of re-expressing various levels of vibratory creation: earth, water, fire, air, ether, and light.

Rainbows and Unicorns

We are now able to state very succinctly the connection between rainbows and unicorns. To the unicorn, at least as it initially evolved on the planet, the rainbow stands as a material symbol of the true nature of its being: a harmonized blend of energies. It manifests at each of these levels—animal, astral being, idea, and planetary love itself.

However, when (or since) humanity plunged the earth perilously close to destruction, due to an over-fascination with carnality, a higher, new star, the Christ, was set over the planetary rainbow by God. The same colors which were separated out by the Prism at the beginning of creation, were now to be condensed again, one by one, to white light by the prism of the spiritual eye.

And so the unicorn evolved into a creature with a quest: to find its own way back to God by gradually reabsorbing the colors of its rainbow body into a single point of white light. Thus began a great search. A search for security not begat of corporeal humors, and for choice not spawned by the lust for power. And still more—a fervent hope for Love not dependent on the whims of an aging planet.
