Sustainable agriculture

© 1989 by Jim Andris

I.

Bioregional agriculture is what we chiefly need.
You know this international produce vending is mainly based on greed.
I have the lovely tomatoes each year because we plant the seed.
Twice as much as I need my fam'ly and twice the neighbors to feed.

Chorus I, II:
We need sustainable agriculture.
You be a ho-er and and I'll be a mulcher.
Take the land back from the vulture,
And set the farmer free.
That'd be you and me

II.

I see this TV commercial today; it's made, I think, by Dow.
They have beautiful music and beautiful people and beautiful places to show.
They try to tell me the chemicals we never can do without.
But it's the proper use of the chemicals that's what it's all about.

Chorus

III.

Who am I to criticize a former president?
You know this Ronnie Reagan, they say for the fam'ly values, he's heaven-sent.
The fam'lies he likes, they drive big cars, and they have big houses for sure.
While the city poor and the farmer fam'ly, he surely did ignore.

Chorus III IV:
We need sustainable agriculture.
You be a ho-er and and I'll be a mulcher.
Take the land back from the vulture,
And set the farmer free.
There is a farmer in me.

IV.

When I was a boy, my brother and I, we worked on my uncle's farm.
Oh, well, the work was hard, but the food was good,
and we could bask in the country charm.
We milked the cows, and we bailed the hay, and we ran the dogs in the snow.
But the kids today, they mostly don't have such nice places to go.

Chorus

V.

There was a time when the fam'ly farm, it was our pride and joy.
But the corporate planners and the big city bankers, that surely did annoy.
They got the congress to lower farm prices and take the loans away.
So that's how our Uncle Same got in the mess that he's in today.

Chorus V, VI:
We need sustainable agriculture.
You be a ho-er and and I'll be a mulcher.
Take the land back from the vulture,
On that we can agree.

VI.

There is a bill in Congress now, it's S-nine seventy.
Promoting healthy food and fertile soil and farms for you and me.
We get together, we write the letter and send it to D. C.
So we're doing our part as the citizens of this democracy.

Chorus
