Lyrics

I.

Tommy, you and I were meant to be
Boaters on a cold and choppy sea,
Travellers to strange and distant lands so far apart,
Brothers separated, yet connected by our hearts.
I couldn't think of anyone so right
To complement my lonely will to fight.
I guess you're here to show me that it's always good to smile,
To live your life with style by laughing all the while.
I guess you're here to help me see the light.

II.

And you were everything that I was not:
A dirty kid in baseball cap and snot.
A kisser of your dog, a wearer of your cowboy clothes—
Fishing with your dad and squishing mud between your toes.
And though so many differences were there,
We found that it was music we could share.
I guess you looked up to me, but when all was said and done,
You were the favorite son. Though no one's lost or won,
You showed us all just what it is to care.

III.

So now we're in our old and wiser years,
And, having had our share of laughs and tears,
I look at you and see how tall a man you stand today,
With grandpa's sparkling eyes of blue, and father's friendly way.
And you were blessed with children and a wife,
A daughter and a son who crown your lives.
I know we've had our struggles, but we learned from them, and grew.
I hope you know it's true that I sure am proud of you.
The positives, they way outweigh the strife.
And I thank God that we have shared this life.
