When
first we met
© 1974 by Jim Andris
When first we met, my eyes were wet with all the pain in life.
I believed with all my heart that I would never take a wife.
But you stood there, slowly smiling, like the shining of the sun.
And I knew in some dim, secret way that you would be the one.
O, the first time that I held you close and told you of my care,
The warmness of our bodies brought a perfume to the air.
It was poetry, it was passion, it was heaven here on earth.
Yes, it took the love you gave to me to prove to me my worth.
Now I'm proud, secure and confident, and learning to be free,
For I know the love I'm giving you, you're giving back to me.
Like a fortress on a hilltop, like a rock above the sea,
We will build a world that's filled with love and hope for you and me.
