Mary
stepped out
© 1963 by Jim Andris
Mary stepped out to stand in the sun
And finish for others what they had begun,
Seeing her life constructed by men
Destroying, forbidding here to begin.
Sad, she recalled first cherishings sweet:
The after-love warmth as she sat at his feet.
Her dreams were schemes of a planning together
Forever unmentioned but well understood.
Yet when she tried to guide his first-love musings,
His tender words became accusings.
Would he not be a good provider?
He moved quickly from beside her.
Troubled, hurt, she put her dreams away,
And here she is today
,
A mother, worn and grey,
Beginning life in a sun bright showing her waste.
He died in his haste, saying he was disgraced
By a woman so lonely, she had one more man;
She did wha she could, and she does what she can.
