Hot Stuff

(Fade in Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” [1979]

Sittin’ here, eatin’ my heart out, baby
Waitin for some lover to call.
Dialed about a thousand numbers, baby,
Almost rang the phone off the wall.

Still clinging to my east-side trailer park existence by day, I was spending more and more time in the gay community by night: MCC, the bars, gay buddies. Frankly, I was getting close to being jaded.

(Fade in Donna Summer’s (“Hot Stuff”)

I need hot stuff.

I had one more important relationship during the summer of 1979. Jim was an ex-navy man, in fact, the navy had kicked him out after 14 years of service because his estranged wife snitched about his homosexuality. Jim was very clear with me that he was a “bottom,” and I surprised myself by being up to the task, so to speak. Jim came to MCC husband-hunting.

We had a lot of fun, Jim and I. We took some trips and he treated me to a Donna Summer concert at the Mississippi River Festival.

On the other hand, Jim was “clingy” and I had a strong independent streak.
Here's how I felt about Jim early that summer.
