Introduction/Poem

I'll start this concert with a poem. Normally I don't write poems, but I found this little poem that I had written a long time ago, and so I wanted to start with this. It says

About now you bump your head on reality
It may create a new wound
Or scratch at old sores
Or cause you to go poking about in ancient castles
But is that more important than building a house

So that's the little poem. Or is it more important than writing a song. Songs, my music, is … there's Judy … [All eyes are on you.] [Laughter.] [Conversation with the audience.] My music I wanted to say something about it. I had a friend once who said that tennis saved his life. It was something to get into and devote himself to. I kind of feel that way about music in my life. And I've been playing for eleven years; I've been writing my own music for seven years, seven or eight years, and the music helps me resolve things that trouble me, feelings. So a lot of songs on the program—they're gonna need a couple programs over here. Go on, let it loose, let it fly [Laughter.] Good.—so in these songs there's a lot of resolution. You can see there's a dilemma, and then there's some kind of resolution. Sometimes, it's just a dilemma, you know, standard rules.
