LeonardoCertain Bible-totin' Americans say that we are cursed of God. May that God continue to curse us further … © Glenda Dilley/Cea Hearth, March, 1980
Gee, the last song. One day before this Walk that we put on took place in the spring, I was wanting to write a new song in regard to gay people, and so I got this vision of Leonardo Da Vinci up there in his house working on painting or inventing something, and his parents calling him down and saying, Leonardo, it's time that you settled down now and get married like your brother Angelo or Manuelo. And I wondered if from the beginning of time, or depending on time, gay people have had to go through this. So anyway, that's part of why this song occurs as it does. [Let me check this card here.] Yeah, that'll about cover it. [Starts song.] So this is one of my favorite songs. [Plays part of introduction.] I knew there was something else I wanted to say about this. I went to a rap group, and the people were talking about whether or not it's feasible or advisable to tell one's parents, particularly younger gay people, that they're gay. And the concern was, you know, if you tell them, and they don't want you anymore, or something like that. And so I said, " I have a song that I'd like to play, so what if the worst happens, and you tell people, and they don't want you anymore? Well, that's alright; Leonardo is my father." Leonardo is my father Will they realize our greatness only after we have gone Plato is my father, shining wise 2000 years Will they tally up the treasures Gertrude Stein she is my mother Will they realize our greatness only after we have gone Will they tally up the treasures Leonardo is my father [Applause] Thank you, thank you. I heard some people trying to sing along on this song. How many people would sing if I played this song again? Yeah?, yeah? There's enough hands to make it worthwhile. Also, my songs have simple melodies; I don't know why that is, but … [Repeats song; people singing along.]
