Even If You Hate

The expectations of holiday cheer magnifies the impact of one's feelings from the darker side …

© Glenda Dilley/Cea Hearth, November, 1979

I wrote a Christmas carol, and this is called "Even If You Hate for Christmas." It's an atypical Christmas carol; it was born from a party I went to for children in an institution, and try as they might, they couldn't put on a happy face and enjoy the Christmas spirit, but the world was too much with them. This feeling stuck in my mind, and I had to go home and write a song about that.

Even if you hate for Christmas that's ok too
The father has a special place for you
Even if you hate for Christmas that's ok too
The mother says a special prayer for you

May you speak out you hatred
May you learn to let it go
For every hate that is spoken
Gives love more room to grow
For your love, more room to grow

Even if you're mad for Christmas that's ok too
The father has a special place for you
Even if you're mad for Christmas that's ok too
The mother says a special prayer for you

May you take all the burning
Turn it into a flame
Use its energy wisely
To build a better name
For yourself a better name

Even if you're sad for Christmas that's ok too
The father has a special place for you
Even if you're sad for Christmas that's ok too
The mother says a special prayer for you

May you treasure the learning
That comes after the pain
May your eyes keep on turning
To the joy that comes again,
To the joy coming back again

Even if you hate for Christmas
Even if you're mad for Christmas that's ok too
Even if you're sad for Christmas that's ok too
The Father has a special place for you.
