John Shows Off His New Lover to Me

That fall was particularly nice. Only once did the old addictive bells ring again.

(Steve Miller Band, “Abracadabra” [1982])

I heat up, I can't cool down
You got me spinnin'
'Round and 'round
'Round and 'round and 'round it goes
Where it stops nobody knows

John, my second lover—the guy with whom I went to Europe—had found a new lover himself, Stephen. He brought Stephen around to show him off to me. The three of us took a leisurely drive up the Mississippi River. The leaves on the trees in the old cemetery where we lunched were vivid yellow, orange and red. Stephen lay with his head in John’s lap.

(Steve Miller Band, “Abracadabra” … )

Abra-abra-cadabra
I want to reach out and grab ya
Abra-abra-cadabra

Later, we visited Principia College which overlooks the beautiful River Bluffs at Alton. I remember standing back watching John with his arm around Stephen looking out over the river and thinking, "God, why can't you ever send me someone nice like that?"

(Steve Miller Band, “Abracadabra” … )

Every time you call my name
I heat up like a burnin' flame
Burnin' flame full of desire
Kiss me baby, let the fire get higher

fade out)

Eventually, as we shall see, my pining heart was to wind around Stephen’s forever.

(Steve Miller Band, “Abracadabra” fade out)
