I have a friend; his name is Tom; I really love him so.
We set out for The Great Land, oh, some several years ago.
In old downtown Seattle, first, we bought some cheese and fruit,
Then sailed the Inside Passage on a very scenic route.
We breakfasted at Ketchican and saw the salmon spawn,
And sourdough and soup at Juneau we then supped upon.
The Inside Passage glistened in its misty greenish-gray,
And glaciers of electric blue we saw upon our way!
Chorus: Alaska, Alaksa, they call you "The Last Frontier."
Your mountains are mighty, your rivers are fresh and clear.
Where the eagle soars, and the orcas play, and the wolf is free to roam,
Alaska, Alaksa, I'm calling you my new home.
At Anchorage we set our for Denali National Park,
With more amazing animals than were on Noah's Ark.
We saw a mamma grizzly and a herd of caribou,
And high above some backpackers, a mighty eagle flew.
We dined that night on salmon, but the best was yet to come:
The loftiest of mountain peaks would leave us stunned and dumb.
Its snowy slopes were gleaming in the morning's orange glow,
And all of this reflected in the tundra lake below.
Chorus
We went on up to Fairbanks, where we thought we'd pan for gold,
But for the last of August, it was getting very cold.
We headed south, but summer snow, it made us turn around,
And that's when we discovered us a better part of town.
We feasted at a salmon bake on berries very blue,
And then went out and found ourselves a honky tonk or two.
That Robert Service poetry can make a fella smile.
And dance hall girls and pianists can entertain in style.
Chorus
The next place that we visited was called "Prince William Sound;"
The same place where that Exxon tanker sadly ran aground.
If God is as we picture him, I'm sure that he would cry
To see his children give their Mother Nature a black eye.
We hitchhiked the peninsula that's known as the Kenai,
And climbed a hill to a Russian church whose steeple brushed the sky.
We sailed the Homer harbor; then we turned and headed home,
And knew Alaska in our minds we evermore would roam.
