I Went to San Francisco

written by Jim Andris in 1976

Well, I went to San Francisco just to look out over the bay
When a good lookin' fellow started walkin' right over my way.
He said, "Hey, what's happenin' man?"
I said, "Dude, I'm a makin' it the best that I can,"
And I asked him if he'd take the time to show me around for a day.

Well, he took me to a house on the corner of Church and Hill
With a back porch view that brings back memories still.
Have you seen a Victorian dwelling?
Imagine streets with several thousand of them swelling
In criss-crossing staircases; just couldn't get my fill.

Then we both had something to eat
At the Chinese restaurant down the street.
Took a trolley to the top of Hyde.
I though we were goin' to slide.
But came right back down to Dolores Park
And sunned ourselves 'til the day was dark.
I was feelin' mighty glad to have him by my side.

Then he took me down to Castro, and we went into the Midnight Sun.
There were lots of groovy guys there, hangin' out, havin' some fun.
The disco beat drummin' in my ears,
Rappin' and havin' a couple of beers,
Watchin' all the fellows and dancin' 'til the day is done.

Then a good-lookin' fellow in beads and blue denim clothes
And a smile full of even white teeth and a turned-up nose
Started walkin' my way and groovin'.
Shore did like the way he was movin'.
As he walked on over to me he was even better lookin' up close.

Well, we really got it on with our tokin' and talkin' and dance.
Smooth-skinned sensational heart-beatin' thrill of romance.
With a face half shadow, half light
He asked me if I wanted to stay for the night.
So we left and seemed to glide along the sidewalk in a dream-like trance.

His apartment was a basement womb
With oriental incense hangin' in the room.
He pulled me down on the bed
And said there's nothin' more left to be said.
So we loved one another in a timeless time
And held one another in a rhymeless rhyme
And generated oceanic feelin's of spray and spume.

Well, I stayed in San Francisco for a time that summer and fall.
The people were warm but the city was a foggy pall.
I left that town of grey
Thinkin' I might come back someday.
Singin' songs of happiness and feelin' 'bout ten feet tall.
